Sonny Corleone in Gaza

from my latest column at pajamas media: by contemporary into gaza in sonny corleone fashion, israel aims to ensure that the hamas attacks — as cowardly as carlo’s battering of sonny’s sister connie — are for good ended.of course, hamas being hamas, they will never stop worrisome to kill jews. fans of the godfather resolution return that carlo, being carlo, chose a coward’s revenge by betraying sonny to rival mobsters, so that at last michael corleone assigned clemenza to deal decisively with carlo.if this analogy can be stretched a bit more, then, where does glenn greenwald seizure? he’s connie pleading frantically on behalf of her abusive quash: “it was my fault! ? i started a fight with him. ? sonny, content don’t do anything. please don’t do anything.” this is what the recrimination israel first crowd at all times says whenever israel responds to repeated attacks by striking retaliation against the terrorists. everlastingly the on request is that israel should make concessions, always condemnation is reserved for israel’s defenders who are, greenwald assures us, “guilty of insufficiently weighing the deaths of palestinian innocents.”please read the whole thing. video of the famous clash between sonny and carlo:

Kitson is feeling financially fit, thanks for asking

Matthewmc_jean_55445751_600On Dec. 24 I reported that Tracey Ross, the L.A. boutique owner who has been a fashion fixture in the city for close to two decades, will close her namesake shop tonight, on New Year’s Eve.

Asked the reason for the closing, Ross told WWD, “Of course, it’s the economy.”

In the headline, I had initially mused, “Is Kitson next?” But the headline was changed to “What’s next on Robertson?”

However, a remaining Google-cached page online seems to have caused confusion in the retail world. As a result, Kitson owner Fraser Ross (no relation to Tracey) is not very happy with me.

So let me set the record straight: I in no way meant to imply that Kitson, the cultural phenomenon retail store frequented by celebs such as Halle Berry, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie, which has come to personify L.A. fashionista destination shopping, is in any danger of closing up shop. Or shops.

Diana dors

So rest easy, trendies. Kitson’s not going anywhere, and you can still get all those hyper-cool, expensive designer T-shirts, boots, accessories and denims you’ve come to love and, dare I say it, need.

Officers in alleged Iraqi plot released

December 20th, 2008 by anthonytaylorblog

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Twenty-five Iraqi military and security officers accused of conspiring with former Saddam Hussein supporters to overthrow the government have been released from jail, according to an official with Iraq’s Interior Ministry.

Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani says the recent arrests of 25 officers were politically motivated.

Iraqi Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani says the recent arrests of 25 officers were politically motivated.

Interior Minister Jawad al-Bolani told CNN on Friday the detentions were politically motivated, sparked by the rough-and-tumble politicking ahead of the January 31 provincial elections and possibly by foreign interests that want to upset Iraq’s growing stability.

An Iraqi judge ordered the men — 16 from the Interior Ministry and nine from the Defense Ministry — to be freed because of a lack of evidence, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Abdul Karee Khalaf.

The Interior Ministry is investigating who originated the charges and ordered the arrests, Khalaf said, promising those responsible will be pursued legally.

Al-Bolani told CNN’s Jill Dougherty on Friday that he had received information in recent weeks from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s office about a terror plot within the ministry. This was still under investigation when government officials seized two dozen officers from the Interior and Defense download crime movie Ministries.

Iraqi security forces this week seized what officials said were suspected members of the al-Awda party, an underground successor to Saddam Hussein’s Baath party. The Baathist movement ruled Iraq for 35 years but was banned after Hussein was overthrown in the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The prime minister’s media spokesman said Thursday the officers had been accused of facilitating the activities of former Baathist regime members, outlaws and terrorists.

"I think there is a political attack on a ministry that has made great achievements — and I believe that prednisone online whenever elections are approaching and there is a competition over provincial councils, we would witness such things and we expect possibly more of this," said al-Bolani, a secular Shiite who is forming his own secularist political party.

Calling claims of a coup "science fiction," Al-Bolani said most of the Interior officers seized have low ranks, such as traffic police, and noted that they have no influence over security operations. In fact, he said, one of the officers named had been disabled a few months ago by a roadside bombing.

"Most of the information is inaccurate, and unfortunately this kind of information always confuses the decision-makers and this is what disturbs us and we are extremely upset over this issue," he said, referring to the charges.

A senior U.S. military official told CNN al-Maliki was behind the arrests, but al-Bolani stopped short of accusing the prime minister of generating the arrests.

When asked who would want to hurt him and the ministry and whether Iranian influence played a role in the arrests, al-Bolani couldn’t pinpoint those who advocated the detentions, even though he believes a government institution or foreign country could have been behind the arrests.

"I think there are certain parties and they will soon be revealed to the public," he said, referring to certain people and not political entities.

Al-Bolani presides over a ministry reputedly dominated by Shiite militias and rife with corruption.

But he said he and his ministry played an important role in stabilizing Iraq since he took over the job in June 2006. He said he helped promote national reconciliation and backed the pro-government "awakening movement" comprised mostly of Sunnis.

"There are parties disturbed by this security stability and security and democratic transformation in the country," he said, challenging those who would have made the arrests a personal vendetta.

"If the attack is on the minister of Interior as a person, then they should face me directly and I am ready to talk," he said. "Whoever wants to harm the government, the state or the min …

Transition talk: In the NOAA

By Kate Sheppard

Obama has selected Oregon State University marine scientist Jane Lubchenco to head the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Reports The Washington Post:

lubchenco, a conservationist who has devoted much of her career to encouraging scientists to become more employed in public policy debates, is also a vocal proponent of curbing greenhouse gases linked to broad warming. … the appointment marks a shift for noaa, which oversees marine issues as well as much of government’s climate work. lubchenco has criticized the force in the past instead of not doing enough to curb overfishing.

A Harvard-educated environmental scientist and marine ecologist, Lubchenco has been at Oregon State University for 30 years, where she is Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology.

She has served as president of the International Council for Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Ecological Society of America. She has been a presidential appointee to the National Science Board, which advises the president and Congress and oversees the National Science Foundation. And she’s won more awards than any one mantel could hold, including, according to The Oregonian, “a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, eight honorary degrees, the 2002 Heinz Award in the Environment, the 2003 Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest, and the 2004 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Institute of Biological Sciences.”

Lubchenco founded the Communication Partnership for Science and the Sea (COMPASS), an effort to bring together academics, scientists, and media types to communicate about marine conservation science. She also founded the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, which selects 20 academic environmental scientists each year for training and networking in the interest of improving the communication of science to policymakers and the public, and she continues to chair program’s advisory board.

She was a participant in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, co-chairing the business and industry subset.

Lubchenco also co-chaired Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s Advisory Group on Global Warming, which in 2005 released recommendations for how the state could reduce its greenhouse-gas emissions.

As the Deep Sea News blog puts it, “Obama Appoints Totally Awesome Marine Biologist to Head NOAA!”
